The Veterinary Assistant supports the veterinarians and veterinary technicians in ensuring quality veterinary care for all pets, advocates for pets, educates clients on all aspects of pet health, and ensures a safe and effective hospital environment. Responsibilities include acting as extra support for veterinarians and technicians to maximize productivity, providing professional and efficient service, performing preparatory procedures, educating clients about wellness plans and pet health, maintaining medical charts, ensuring safety through proper restraining techniques and clean environments, assisting with surgery, mentoring paraprofessionals, and other assigned duties. The role requires adherence to the Five Principles of Mars, Inc., strong leadership and functional competencies, multi-tasking, communication, organizational, problem-solving, client service, intellectual, mathematical, and computer skills. Attitudes such as initiative, integrity, cooperativeness, flexibility, independence, and stress tolerance are essential. Special working conditions include ability to work long periods at a computer, confidence around pets, potential for over 40 hours per week including weekends and evenings, physical requirements, and exposure to various hazards. Qualifications include completion of a NAVTA approved Veterinary Assistant program or equivalent, high school diploma preferred, minimum age 18 for radiography duties, and one year related experience preferred. The position is part-time and located at Banfield Mt. Pleasant W SC.
