The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at

appointment. See Table [T34]. The salary range for this position is $215,000-$260,000. "Off-scale salaries", i.e. a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Position description

The Director, Tech and Human Performance position includes substantial academic and administrative responsibilities.

The key responsibilities of the Director position, under the general guidance and direction of the Faculty Director of the Center for Resilience and Data Justice are listed below. This position will also collaborate with other leaders and campus entities involved with data-centric research. Within this collaborative context, the incumbent will have latitude to exercise expertise and knowledge to achieve the goals of the center.

This position will be a hybrid job working both remote and onsite at the UCLA campus or other related locations as business needs dictate.

STRATEGIC VISION AND LEADERSHIP

1. In collaboration with key faculty and leaders, develop and articulate a strategic vision for building a leading national center for research and education at the intersection of data, technology, health, sport, ethics, and governance, and develop short- and long-range plans for achieving that vision.


2. Collaborate in, develop, and lead the execution of world-class and innovative research (including academic and applied research), programming, and initiatives that advance the strategic mission of the university in relation to interdisciplinary data-centric research.


3. Foster a vibrant intellectual community at UCLA to improve knowledge regarding the broader societal impact of sport and health-related technologies, to develop innovative solutions to identify, and to address the associated opportunities and risks.


4. Engage and support students at UCLA and design and implement programs to support student education and training, career development, and post-graduate opportunities.


5. Create a culture of cooperation, creativity, mutual respect, and professional development with data-centric initiatives such as DataX and departments across the divisions and schools and in engagements with the broader UCLA campus, and beyond.

PROGRAM RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Propose, develop, implement and lead projects and programs that bear upon the intersection of data, technology, health, sport, ethics, and governance, including interdisciplinary collaborations with schools and departments at UCLA.


2. Develop and organize colloquia and conferences designed to promote creative and critical thought and discourse on a diverse array of topics related to the societal impact of sport and health-related technologies, and foster engagement by faculty and students as well as participants from across UCLA campus and the community.


3. Develop workshops, lectures, and training programs throughout the year, to foster and disseminate knowledge on a variety of challenges at the intersection of data, technology, health, sport, ethics, and governance, build interdisciplinary collaboration across the university, and foster ties with the broader professional community.

CURRICULAR DEVELOPMENT & TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Work with the relevant administration and faculty members to broaden and deepen curricular offerings addressing the societal implications of sport and health-related technologies.


2. Depending on the candidate's background, responsibilities may also include teaching one class per year, including clinical teaching, and overseeing student independent studies.


3. Provide individualized academic and career counselling to support students interested in issues at the intersection of data, technology, health, sport, ethics, and governance.


4. Work with faculty at UCLA affiliated with data-centric centers including DataX to develop a premier program in interdisciplinary graduate research training in data sciences.

RESEARCH INITIATIVES

1. Develop, coordinate, and support a world class and innovative research program in technology and human performance. The program should involve a balance of science and engineering projects-such as those using sensor-based, wearable, and optical technologies; marker-based and markerless motion analysis; biomechanical modelling; and applied data analytics and machine learning for sports performance optimization and injury risk reduction-and justice, power, and equity projects, such as those exploring the societal and ethical implications of data and data-informed technologies, particularly in relation to governance, accountability, privacy, security, labor, and ecology.


2. Help advance the reputation of data justice efforts on campus and help position DataX a hub for scholarship on fundamental data science, innovative applications and creative activity, and data justice and critical data studies.

FUNDRAISING AND FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Develop and lead fundraising activities to support the center's mission, including public and private grants, major donors, events, annual giving, planned giving, endowment campaign, and in-kind support.


2. Develop and lead high-value collaborations between UCLA and the high performance (Olympic) and professional sport sector in the capacity of Special Advisor, LA28.


3. Nurture effective relations with existing donors and reach out to potential donors.


4. Manage and continue to expand the center's budget.

OUTREACH RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provide strategic leadership and direction to build the public profile of the data justice research in technology, health, sport, ethics, and governance, particularly in the context of the Los Angeles Olympics 2028.


2. Serve as a spokesperson for UCLA's work in technology and human performance before a variety of audiences including across UCLA campus, in broader academic settings, and with policymakers, practitioners, civil society groups, and the public.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will have a background that specifically demonstrates the following:

* A Ph.D. (or equivalent)

* Extensive track record of research and innovation in the use of sport and health-related technologies, program leadership, and program building

* Substantial successful management and leadership experience

* Extensive experience, engagement and understanding of data, technology, health, sport, ethics, and governance

* An excellent reputation and an extensive established network in the high performance (Olympic) and professional sport ecosystem

* Advanced administrative and organizational skills

* A proven track record in fundraising and budget management

* Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students and the broader community

* Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to draw on the ideas of others and convert them into meaningful strategies and plans and to represent those ideas to a variety of stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, policymakers, the public and the press

* Ability to facilitate dialogues, identify barriers to effectiveness, and generate support for solutions

* High professional and ethical standards that reflect UCLA's core values, purpose and mission

Basic qualifications

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Gender Studies, or in a Humanities, Social Sciences or Arts field of expertise related to the area of Human Performance, Critical Race Theory.

Preferred qualifications
