DUTIES: The Public Services Librarian designs, promotes, implements, and administers circulation, reserve, and reference services for all user groups of the library. The Public Service Librarian works with the Library Director, their direct supervisor, to provide circulation and reference assistance to library users, supervise circulation desk staff, assist with collection maintenance, and represent the library and college as a frontline staff member.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Circulation:

  • Develops procedures, makes policy recommendations, and controls the operations of circulation and reserve services.
  • Maintains borrower database in ILS and updates as needed. Sends pre-overdue and overdue notices to borrowers.
  • Administers call-in process for each semester and assists with library billing.
  • Prepares and submits statistics on public service activities for various reports and surveys; contributes to library decision-making.

Reference Services:

  • Provides reference services to meet the unique needs of the college community including research, referrals, database services, training of student assistants in reference work and creation of finding tools and instructional aids.
  • Maintains and develops the reference collection including review, appraisal, weeding, and recommendation for purchase.

Collection Maintenance:

  • Oversees stacks maintenance activities and collection inventory projects. Maintains the reserve collection at the circulation desk.
  • Assists with collection maintenance by assessing condition of items during circulation transactions and identifying damaged materials.
  • Processes new serials and assists with storing and organizing current serials and serial records.
  • Responsible for library displays, including new books displays.

Supervisory:

  • Responsible for the hiring, training, and supervision of student assistants and the Evening & Weekend Supervisor. Maintains schedule for 80 hours/week of circulation desk coverage.
  • Reviews and approves student assistants’ timecards
  • Submits annual evaluations for all work-study assistants.

Miscellaneous:

  • Maintains library audio-visual equipment and oversees repair and replacement; assists library users with technology and communicates with IT regarding necessary troubleshooting.
  • Supervises special projects of a set duration.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS:

  • Demonstrates a deep understanding of and appreciation for the college’s mission; ability to communicate clearly and support the established policies and procedures of the library and the college.
  • Oversees the functions, workflows, and continual training for all activities at the circulation desk.
  • Offers professional, courteous customer service for library users.
  • Provides quality training and supervision of student assistants.
  • Works independently and cooperatively with colleagues, handles multiple assignments and changing priorities, attends to detail, and meets deadlines.
  • Respects the confidentiality of patron requests and records and adheres to the ALA Code of Ethics.
  • Assists other library staff when appropriate.
  • Stays aware of current library trends and practices.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

Experience

  • Two years of library management experience related to public services.
  • Two years of supervisory experience.
  • Broad liberal arts education; prefer graduates of St. John’s.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Academic library experience.
  • Knowledge of the SirsiDynix Horizon ILS system and SQL.

Education

  • ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library Science.

Interpersonal Skills

  • Demonstrates sound judgment, tact, and discretion.
  • Work involves much personal contact with others inside and outside the college for purposes of giving or obtaining information, building relationships, or soliciting cooperation.
  • Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with all members of the college community.

Other Skills

  • Demonstrated management and planning skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience with efficient file and data management processes.
  • Microsoft Office and Microsoft 365 proficiency; familiarity with integrated library systems.
  • Willingness to work evening and weekend shifts as needed.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift 40 pounds and push and control wheeled carts with more than 100 pounds of weight.

COMPENSATION: Grade 12 (Minimum Salary $45,748) – Offer based on prior experience, full benefits package included.
