The position of medical physics resident entails provision of clinical medical physics duties matching with the individual resident's level of advancement and competence. Residency is the phase of graduate medical physics education and ending after the educational requirements for the medical specialty certifying board has been completed. A medical physics resident's responsibilities include clinical medical physics duties commensurate with the level of training.

The medical physics resident is both a learner and a provider of clinical medical physics. The resident participates in clinical medical physics duties under the supervision of more experienced physicists. As their training progresses, resident is expected to gain competence and require less supervision, progressing from on-site and contemporaneous supervision to more indirect and periodic supervision.

There are about ten rotations. The resident is expected to pass the evaluation after each rotation.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the supervision of medical physicists:

1. Conducts routine calibration and testing of radiation producing equipment including but not limited to linear accelerators, CT simulators and High Dose Radiation (HDR) units in accordance with State and Federal regulations.
2. Measurement of radiation characteristics and collection of dosimetry data for clinical use.
3. Treatment planning and patient dosage calculation.
4. Conducts routine patient chart review for treatment progression and accuracy.
5. Performs dose calculation/measurement to radiosensitive organ of the patient.
6. Perform radiation shielding calculation /measurement.
7. HDR and Low Dose Radiation (LDR) Brachytherapy.
8. Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) /Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) planning, QA and treatments.
9. Learn special procedures such as Total Body Irradiation and Total Skin Electron Irradiation (TSEI).
10. Review in-vivo dosimetry performed by the dosimetrist/therapist.
11. Develop a personal program of self-study and professional growth with appropriate guidance from the faculty and Program Director.
12. Participate in safe, effective, and compassionate patient care under appropriate supervision, commensurate with the level of advancement and responsibility granted by the Residency Program.
13. Participate fully in the educational activities of the Residency Program, including responsibility for teaching and supervising of the residents and students as assigned and/or requested by the Program Director.

PHYSICIAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Frequent use of fingers to operate computer. Sitting for up to 7 hours per day, in 30-minute increments. Frequent use of hands for chart handling and writing. Twisting and turning of hands to operate equipment. Lifts treatment aids weighing up to 50 pounds. Carries objects of up to 50 pounds. Occasionally stoops and bends. Reaches above shoulder level. Hearing as it relates to normal conversation. Seeing as it relates to general vision and depth perception and visual monotony.

EDUCATION:

Graduate from a Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP) approved medical physics master or PhD program.
