Join to apply for the Lifeguard (SMY) role at Santa Monica Family YMCA YMCA Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring the safety of everyone in the pool area. This involves being alert at the assigned lifeguard station, enforcing all pool rules, and carrying out other assigned duties, such as giving lessons and running programs in line with the Association’s purposes and policies. The person in this role must ensure a safe environment and provide high-quality service to all members, parents, children, guests, staff, and volunteers. Staff & Pool Responsibilities Know and enforce pool rules at all times. Provide continuous, uninterrupted scanning of the pool and aquatic area. Understand and consistently enforce safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available as needed. Use problem solving skills to make quick decisions, instruct, evaluate, supervise, and recognize the potential for danger or injury. Maintain effective, positive relationships with members, participants, and other staff. Review all emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Complete related reports as required. Maintain accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code. Play an active role in continuously identifying ways to improve safety standards. Continuously monitor the aquatic area for hazardous or unsafe conditions. Immediately report all hazardous or unsafe conditions to management and take appropriate action. Successfully complete and pass periodic aquatic safety assessments. Requirements Applicant must be a minimum of 16 years of age. American Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard Certification required. Hold a current CPR & First Aid certification through ASHI, American Red Cross (ARC) or American Heart Association (AHA) or be willing to get certified at applicant’s own expense (renewals covered by the Y). Pass a swim test and demonstrate water rescue techniques. Must be able to respond to any given emergency and know how to use emergency equipment. Demonstrate good verbal skills in communicating with members, parents, children, guests, and staff. A genuine interest in people and the ability to establish harmonious relationships with staff, volunteers, members, parents, and children is needed. Physical Demands Stand, walk, sit, bend, squat, kneel, and be in good physical health. Perform rescues and respond to emergency situations in a timely manner, including: first aid, medical and/or water emergencies. Be on their feet for extended periods of time. Safely withstand exposure to the elements which include warm or cold temperatures in the aquatic center while on duty. See at normal distance and hear normal conversations and sounds.
