States United Democracy Center, a nonpartisan organization focused on the critical role states play in election protection, is hiring two (2) Legal Interns to support the work of the Legal Department for Summer 2025. 

About the Organization:

The States United Democracy Center is a nonpartisan organization advancing free, fair, and secure elections. We connect state and local officials, law enforcement leaders, and pro-democracy partners across America with the tools and expertise they need to safeguard democracy. We are guided by a bipartisan Advisory Board of former state and federal officials, issue experts, and law enforcement leaders from both major political parties who are committed to protecting the will of the people and the rule of law.

Job Overview:  

The legal intern works with internal and external attorneys, policy experts, and researchers to help analyze election and voting laws, provide legal guidance to the organization and state officials, and support litigation to protect elections, voting, and democracy.  The Legal Intern will report to the Senior Counsel or Counsel. 

 

Responsibilities:  

  • Conduct legal, policy, and factual research in support of litigation, policy advocacy, and related initiatives.  
  • Draft memoranda, court documents, and research materials. 
  • Collaborate with partner organizations on litigation and policy matters.  
  • Analyze, research, and draft materials for public education including policy reports, white papers, and press materials.  
  • Assist in developing litigation and support ongoing litigation, working closely with other States United attorneys and co-counsel.   

 

Minimum Requirements:  

  • Current enrollment in an ABA-accredited law school.   
  • Excellent research, writing, and communication skills.   
  • Excellent initiative and project management skills including prioritization and time management.  
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and conducting online legal research.   
  • Knowledge and/or demonstrated interest in voting rights, elections law, and/or rule of law.  
  • Commitment to States United’s mission, and to advancing free, fair, and secure elections.

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Familiarity with issues related to elections, voting, and state government.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary for this position will be a $7,500 stipend (10 weeks, 40 hours/week)

We have offices located in Boston, MA, New York, NY, and Washington, DC. This internship can also be remote.
