Job Description

Purpose - The purpose of this position is to document stream flow and water quality. This position will also conduct water sampling, stream delineations, wetland delineations, benthic collection, longitudinal stream profiling, data analysis, rapid bio assessment, perform wetland delineations and mitigation oversite.

• Performing accurate documentation of water monitoring quality and quantity information, while applying newly learned traits to applicable field tasks.
• Safely operating a pickup truck on and off public roadways
• Communicating effectively and appropriately
• Documenting field sampling and inspection results through making entries in written logs and chain of custody forms
• Communicating sampling and inspection results to supervisor in oral and written forms.
• Performing actions within an appropriate and reasonable time period

Physical Requirements - Employee must be in physical condition to safely do the following:

• Traverse uneven, rocky, wet, slippery, muddy terrain (frozen, icy surfaces in winter).
• Climb on hillsides, in wooded areas and on embankment side slopes.
• Carry sampling and water level monitoring equipment.
• Use and carry mechanical brushing clearing device (chainsaws, weed eaters).

• Carry and utilize all water chemical treatments
• Safely operate a company vehicle

Communication Requirements - Employee will need to communicate clearly.

• Proper documentation of field sampling and inspection results through written log and QA\QC forms and checks.
• Employee must clearly, effectively, and appropriately communicate in written, electronic and verbal forms.
• Communicates water quality, sampling and scheduling problems to supervisor in oral and written forms.
• Communicates well with landowners.
• Communicates with staff regarding issues with landowners.
• Communicates with staff regarding changes in monitoring area.

Environment Requirements - Weather and operating conditions impact this job.

• Works in extreme hot and cold conditions and wet, rainy conditions.
• Respects landowner’s property, never to harm or damage.
• Operate company vehicles from various job sites and conduct daily inspections on those vehicles.

• Must be capable of working in and around active mining areas and with industrial equipment

Qualifications - Minimum knowledge, skills, abilities, or other attributes for this position:

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences preferred (or related field)

• Must have knowledge to troubleshoot monitoring and sampling equipment
• Knowledgeable on use and maintenance of monitoring and sampling equipment.
• Ability to understand and use permit maps for identification of sampling sites.
• Ability to demonstrate an understanding the stream monitoring protocol.
• Capable of making field decisions for sampling of points, location of sample, etc.
• Possessing skills to accurately complete field reporting and pictorial documentations.
• Possessing initiative to follow through, overcome obstacles, and meet objectives.
• Familiar with the monitoring area, and observant of any changes.
• High School degree or GED equivalent is required.
• Demonstrates strong ability to learn and apply new traits to assigned tasks.
• Capable of understanding and using monitoring and sampling equipment.
• Ability to understand and follow water-monitoring protocol.
• Possessing initiative to follow through, overcome obstacles, and meet objectives.
• Observant for problems with water management diversions and structures.
• A High school diploma or a GED is required.
• Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license
• Prior to start date, candidate must possess appropriate MSHA surface training.
• Maintains a satisfactory safety record.

• Arrives at each site with necessary equipment to perform assigned tasks.
