We’re seeking a Creative Technologist to join the Windows & Devices Design & Research team and help reimagine the future of Windows and our device portfolio. At Windows Design, we shape the core operating system—the canvas where billions work, play, and create. At Devices Design, we bring software to life through hardware—Surface, Xbox, peripherals, and new form factors that blend digital and physical. Together, we explore how AI-first, multimodal interactions can redefine what’s possible across software, hardware, and future workflows. In this role, you’ll join a startup-style creative lab inside Windows Design—curious, ambitious, and maker-first. We explore emerging technologies early and act as scouts: spotting trends, translating them into opportunities and user scenarios, and demystifying them for teams. Our work spans from adding subtle magic to today’s products to concepting and building entirely new ones that anticipate where the industry is heading. We thrive in 0–1, where ambiguity fuels invention. Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond. How We Define a Creative Technologist: A Creative Technologist is part designer, technologist, storyteller, and entrepreneur—sitting at the intersection of business, experience, and technology. They ask “What if?”—then make it real. They thrive on ambiguity, push boundaries through hands-on experimentation, and translate bold ideas into tangible experiences. Creative Technologists are makers who prefer to show more and tell less, creating and communicating across media and disciplines. Qualifications Required Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, User Experience, Interaction Design, or related field AND 3+ years experience working in product or service design OR equivalent experience (e.g., demonstrated experience working in product or service design or using design thinking to solve problems). 3+ years’ experience using Figma and Adobe Creative Cloud, with a portfolio of high-quality artifacts that demonstrate end-to-end design process experience, including shipping products or delivering services. 1+ years’ experience applying generative AI (including LLMs and agent-based systems) to real products or prototypes, with knowledge of patterns, constraints, evaluation methods, and integration into user experiences. Other Requirements : Online portfolio showcasing your work across design, development, storytelling, and emerging tech, plus code samples with links to your GitHub or CodePen that demonstrate your development work. Preferred Qualifications : Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Graphic/Product/Visual Design, HCI, or related field; advanced degree or equivalent experience is a plus. Solid collaboration skills with demonstrated ability to work across disciplines (Design, PM, Engineering, Research). Ability to shape concepts into narratives, storyboard interactions, and produce/edit videos (Premiere, After Effects, DaVinci Resolve, or similar). Background in motion design/animation and XR (AR/VR/MR) prototyping (e.g., C4D, Blender, Unity, Unreal) for richer storytelling. Experience building scripts, plugins, or tools that extend workflows and accelerate prototyping. Exposure to hardware or IoT prototyping (sensors, microcontrollers, interactive devices) and blending physical-digital experiences. Experience working in a fast-paced, 0–1 startup or incubation environment. Experience framing new opportunity spaces, shaping strategy, or influencing product roadmaps through early explorations. Familiarity with Windows app/UI frameworks (e.g., WinUI/Windows App SDK) and Fluent design patterns.
