Job Description

Viterbo University's College of Nursing and Health Science-Communication Disorders and Sciences Program, invites applications for an adjunct faculty position starting May 2025, to teach in the Master of Speech-Language Pathology (MS-SLP) program. The adjunct will teach the following course: Clinical Education Seminar: NICU SLP. This course will be taught in-person; remote work is not available for this course.

Course Description : This course will provide an overview of feeding and swallowing problems that can occur in neonates and infants, including a discussion of risk factors and underlying etiologies. Hands-on simulation practice will be provided in the Viterbo Clinical Simulation Learning Center. Students will learn to identify growth and communication development in premature infants. Prerequisite: 513, concurrent with 524.

For more course descriptions:

Course Design and Length : This course is 1-credit and taken as an intensive at the beginning of summer semester (May 2025). The NICU course will be taught across approximately 1-2 weeks, with course content being delivered approximately 2-4 hours a day. This allows graduate students to complete the course in an intensive timeframe, freeing the remainder of summer to be at off-campus placements. The course is designed to introduce students to the aspects and considerations of services SLPs provide in the NICU. It will contain both elements of lecture and hands-on simulation.

Clinical Simulations: In addition to traditionally delivered course content, the ideal candidate will be creatively driven to create and deliver several clinical simulations throughout the course. The adjunct faculty will work closely with the Director of Clinical Education for guidance and support when implementing simulations. Simulations should be practical scenarios that students may expect to encounter in real-life practice, focusing on the most relevant knowledge and skills related to NICU evidence-based practice.

Job Duties: The adjunct for the course will be responsible for all aspects of course design, including appropriate textbook and/or article selection, creation of assignments/quizzes/tests, and all other pedagogical elements of the course. They will be responsible for instructing students each day of the course as well as keeping up with the course Moodle page (similar to Black Board or Canvas). They will be responsible for creating and implementing clinical simulations appropriate to the course content, for which they will track and approve clinical simulation hours on the Calipso platform. The adjunct is responsible for timely communications with students in-person or via email throughout the length of the course. Applicants must have the ability to physically be present on campus each day of the course and be able to deliver content for several consecutive hours (with short breaks). Candidates are preferred who can lift a minimum of 25 pounds, as this is at times required when lifting simulation cases (i.e. Baby Paul 27-week old NICU manikin). The adjunct faculty member reports directly to the Program Director.

Applicants must meet the minimum education and professional experience qualifications listed in order to be considered for the position. All decision are made upon the discretion of the department.

Qualifications:

  • Outlook email, SharePoint, Google Drive, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint; experience with Moodle preferred though training will be provided; training will be provided on use of Calipso if the applicant is not familiar with this application

Application Process:

Qualified applicants should send a cover letter and their resume and/or curriculum vitae to the application portal for review.
